Learn more about Stevie Anderson

A First Nations Weaving Artist based in Collie, Western Australia.

My name is Stevie. I live in Collie WA with my husband and three children.

My Grandfather came from the Martu and Njamal people and my Grandmother came from the Nyikina people, both from the north of WA. I was born in the red dirt country of Port Hedland WA but grew up down south near the river and tall jarrah trees. Growing up down south I enjoyed swimming in the river and collecting firewood with my family out in the bush.

My favourite memories up north were pulling in bream on my hand line, following Dad through the mud to check the mangroves for mud crabs and following Mum along the shoreline with the throw net so I could keep a bait fish as a pet. I missed out on some schooling as my parents strongly believed in taking us kids back to touch our Mother’s country and be amongst family and our culture. I feel privileged to have grown up on different countries and to have travelled as it gave me an open mind.

Pipi Weaving Owner Stevie Anderson
Pipi Weaving Workshop

“Pipi” means Mother in Nyangumarta, one of the languages my Grandfather spoke before being removed and placed in a mission down south.

— Stevie Anderson, Njamal/Nyikina Woman

In my 20s I was shown how to weave by my Nana Coral (a Nyikina elder) and my big cousins.

Weaving was exactly the creative outlet I needed and so when my babies napped I would weave. Initially I made earrings, and after some interest I began selling them. I needed a home for selling my products and so I created a page on social media and decided on the name “Pipi Weaving”.

Today Pipi Weaving is not only offering a range of woven jewellery and baskets, we also offer workshops teaching participants how to weave.
